Thank you one and all.\u00a0 I\u2019ll try to include one from everyone.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This week, I\u2019m incorporating Christmas Carols as well as songs in general because you sent in a lot of requests for them.\u00a0 I\u2019m also taking some old classics that some artists have put their own twist on.<\/p>\n<p>So here goes.\u00a0 But before that Paddy Englishman, Paddy Irishman and Paddy Scotsman all died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates. &#8216;In honour of this Holy season, you must each possess something that symbolises Christmas to get into heaven.&#8217; Saint Peter said.<\/p>\n<p>Paddy Englishman fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. &#8216;It&#8217;s a candle&#8217;, he said. &#8216;You may pass through the pearly gates&#8217; Saint Peter said.<\/p>\n<p>Paddy Scotsman reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, &#8216;They&#8217;re bells.&#8217; Saint Peter said &#8216;You may pass through the pearly gates&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Paddy Irishman started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women&#8217;s panties. St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, &#8216;And just what do those symbolise?&#8217; Paddy Irishman replied, &#8216;These are Carol&#8217;s.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>First up, it\u2019s one that is so obvious I forgot about it.\u00a0 It\u2019s\u00a0<em>Jingle Bells<\/em>, suggested by Dick in Cincinnati.\u00a0 Did you know that it was written in 1850 as a winter song, not a Christmas Song, by James Lord Pierpont and called \u2018<em>One Horse Open Sleigh\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 It was written in Medford Massachusetts in the Simpson Tavern (I didn\u2019t know the Simpsons were around then!). However a manuscript was discovered in 1995 in Fr. Mohr&#8217;s handwriting and dated by researchers as ca. 1820. It shows that Fr. Mohr wrote the words in 1816 when he was assigned to a pilgrim church in Mariapfarr, Austria, and shows that the music was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818. This is the earliest manuscript that exists and the only one in Fr. Mohr&#8217;s handwriting. Franz Gruber&#8217;s arrangement was influenced by the musical tradition of his rural home. It\u2019s called\u00a0<em>Christmas 1915<\/em>\u00a0or maybe\u00a0<em>Silent Night 1915<\/em>. Seemingly this is based on true events during the First World War when unofficial ceasefires took place along the western front.\u00a0 Through the week leading up to Christmas, parties of German and British soldiers began to exchange seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches. On occasion, the tension was reduced to the point that individuals would walk across to talk to their opposite numbers bearing gifts. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, many soldiers from both sides \u2013 as well as, to a lesser degree, from French units \u2013 independently ventured into &#8220;no man&#8217;s land&#8221;, where they mingled, exchanging food and souvenirs. As well as joint burial ceremonies, several meetings ended in carol-singing. It was first performed in Dublin on 13<sup>th<\/sup>April 1742, and received its London premiere nearly a year later. Some modern interpretations include a track on Sting&#8217;s single &#8220;Russians&#8221; (1985) and on his album\u00a0<em>If On a Winter&#8217;s Night&#8230;<\/em>\u00a0(2009). English rock band Marillion recorded a version for their 1999 fan club-exclusive album\u00a0<em>Christmas.Marillion<\/em>, which was also performed on their 2003 DVD\u00a0<em>Christmas in the Chapel<\/em>. Canadian roots musicians Terry McDade and The McDades on their 2001 release &#8220;Midwinter&#8221;. Christian rock band Jars of Clay also recorded a version for their 2007 &#8220;Christmas Songs&#8221; album. C. File (Philadelphia, 1885). Some sources show the author as Martin Luther; this attribution (now shown as being incorrect) is based on the title \u201cLuther\u2019s Cradle Hymn,\u201d given to these words by the composer, James Murray, in his\u00a0<em>Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses<\/em>\u00a0(Cincinnati, Ohio: The John Church Co., 1887). Verse 3 is by John T. McFarland (1851-1913).The third verse appeared with a tune by Charles H. Gabriel (simply marked &#8220;C&#8221;),Therefore these words are probably by Charles Gabriel.
