{"id":9641,"date":"2023-11-22T17:11:50","date_gmt":"2023-11-22T17:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.webhostlabs.net\/synergy\/?p=9641"},"modified":"2023-11-27T19:36:47","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T19:36:47","slug":"review-of-tommy-emmanuel-concert-on-tuesday-5th-march-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.webhostlabs.net\/synergy\/2023\/11\/22\/review-of-tommy-emmanuel-concert-on-tuesday-5th-march-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Review of Tommy Emmanuel concert on Tuesday 5th March 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>The Guitar Maestros<\/h1>\n<p>who let their fingers do the talking<\/p>\n<p><i>By Bob Tallent<br \/>\n6th March 2013<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"img_caption none\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"caption\" title=\"Tommy Emmanuel\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dpnlive.com\/images\/stories\/people2\/tommy_emmanuel1.jpg\" alt=\"Tommy Emmanuel\" width=\"350\" height=\"286\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.dpnlive.com\/images\/stories\/people2\/tommy_emmanuel1.jpg\" data-jchll=\"true\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"img_caption\">Tommy Emmanuel<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"easy_img_caption\"><span class=\"easy_img_caption_inner\">Tommy Emmanuel<\/span><\/span>Last August (2012), I booked 4 tickets to see Tommy Emmanuel in concert at the The Helix in Dublin.\u00a0 This was my third time seeing the virtuoso live in Dublin.\u00a0 I have been a fan of Tommy for many years and admire his style.\u00a0 Having watched practically every YouTube video of him over the years, I decided to see him for the first time in 2010 in the same venue.<\/p>\n<p>So I booked two tickets, for my wife Loreto, and me.\u00a0 You see, I\u2019ve been trying to teach myself guitar for the past few years and because I sing like a crow, I decided to learn fingerstyle.\u00a0 A 12 year old kid would be able to pick it up fairly quickly and be at my level in six months, but it has taken me six years to be just embarrassingly poor.<\/p>\n<p>Many years ago, I came across Tommy Emmanuel and looked him up on youtube.\u00a0 I was gobsmacked when I saw just how good he was and wrote an article on him for this site on 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0December 2011.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dpnlive.com\/living\/entertainment-arts-other-news\/music?id=470:tommy-emmanuel-&amp;catid=45:music-----\">See here<\/a>.\u00a0 That was his last gig in Ireland up to last Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Back to buying the tickets in 2010:\u00a0 Loreto is not into the guitar; she likes music and loves live performances, so I told her that I had booked a ticket for her as well to see Tommy.\u00a0 She said great.\u00a0 It was \u2018great\u2019 in terms of that\u2019s ok; I\u2019ll come along, no enthusiasm.\u00a0 I told her that it was solo guitar, that he was brilliant and would be playing some stuff she knew.\u00a0 She\u2019s not into YouTube, so she didn\u2019t look him up beforehand.<\/p>\n<div class=\"img_caption none\">\n<p class=\"img_caption\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10524\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.webhostlabs.net\/synergy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/tommy-emmanuel-and-bobweb-295x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.webhostlabs.net\/synergy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/tommy-emmanuel-and-bobweb-295x300.jpg 295w, https:\/\/dev.webhostlabs.net\/synergy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/tommy-emmanuel-and-bobweb.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"img_caption\">Tommy Emmanuel and Bob Tallent<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"easy_img_caption\"><span class=\"easy_img_caption_inner\">Tommy Emmanuel and Bob Tallent<\/span><\/span>It was November 2010, we went to the Helix and she was mesmerised.\u00a0 Tommy has such a charismatic stage presence that he is totally at ease on stage because the guitar is part of his body.\u00a0 If you are a guitarist, you go to a Tommy performance to see the absolute expert at work.\u00a0 In my mind, there is no better acoustic guitarist in the world.\u00a0 Like all geniuses, he makes it look easy. He is relaxed on stage and has that X factor that cannot be described.\u00a0 I suppose if we could describe it, others would copy, and Tommy can\u2019t be copied.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010 he played everything I expected and more.\u00a0 Brilliant is an understatement.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, I kept a lookout for Tommy coming back to Dublin.\u00a0 His show was arranged for December 2011 and I bought the tickets four months in advance.\u00a0 This time I said it to friends of mine, Tony &amp; Ann Judge, who said they wanted to come along too.\u00a0 So I bought four tickets.\u00a0 This time, I organised a \u2018meet and greet\u2019 with Tommy.\u00a0 We went to the desk in the Helix at 7 o\u2019clock and met Tommy\u2019s staff in charge and were told to wait \u2018over there\u2019. We waited and waited, and waited some more!\u00a0 At 8.15 we went into the concert.\u00a0 It seems the \u2018meet and greet\u2019 came and went and we weren\u2019t called. All of us were very disappointed, but the show more than made up for it.\u00a0 He played a lot of his old stuff and some new stuff that was brilliant. We got there before 7, I spoke to Tommy\u2019s staff and we went in to the inner sanctum to meet him.\u00a0 There were about 30 people there.<\/p>\n<p>We sat down and one minute later Tommy appeared.\u00a0 He came straight over to Tony and me, introduced himself (as if he had to); we responded likewise and then had a short chat. \u00a0I was like a schoolkid and got tongue-tied.\u00a0 Never in my wildest dreams did I expect him to actually come and talk to me!\u00a0 Then, he made his way around to every single person there, shook everyone\u2019s hand and spoke to each person as if he knew them for years.<\/p>\n<table class=\"mceItemTable\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<div class=\"avPlayerWrapper avVideo\">\n<div class=\"avPlayerContainer\">\n<div id=\"AVPlayerID_1_ffd241fbda0e94a42a7111471a3e0912\" class=\"avPlayerBlock\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"JoomlaWorks AllVideos Player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_DITKnBm3O4?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"350\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>A few people had brought guitars for Tommy to sign, which he duly did.\u00a0 Even the people who were too shy to ask, he asked them if they wanted them signed.\u00a0 He signed everyone\u2019s \u2018meet and greet card\u2019 and then spoke about music and guitars.\u00a0 Some people asked him how to play particular pieces, so he took their guitar and showed them, explaining chord changes, finger style and so on.\u00a0 One guy asked him how to play a particular part of one song, so Tommy played it for him and he then said, that\u2019s the bit, how do you do that?\u00a0 Tommy said he\u2019s been going &#8216;de de de dah&#8217; for 50 years and he showed him.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone who wanted it got their picture taken with him. I was one of them.\u00a0 And I got a few videos of the M&amp;G also.\u00a0 At 7.30, he went off to get ready for the concert.<\/p>\n<p>We went into the foyer and had a pint before the show which started at 8 pm on the button.\u00a0 I love that.\u00a0 Starting on time is one way of showing respect for the audience.\u00a0 Artists who appear late on stage for their shows, are, in my mind, simply showing pure contempt for their audience.\u00a0 People make arrangements to get there and pay good money for the tickets, so a late start is totally unacceptable.<\/p>\n<table class=\"mceItemTable\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<div class=\"avPlayerWrapper avVideo\">\n<div class=\"avPlayerContainer\">\n<div id=\"AVPlayerID_2_c09581b80ba290e7bb30ebdf6e48f0d3\" class=\"avPlayerBlock\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"JoomlaWorks AllVideos Player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ULtbxEWy5gc?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"350\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Justin Bieber was one of those at the London O2 Arena this week.\u00a0 He started nearly two hours late. Justin was due to start at 8.30 pm and came on at 10.20 without apologising onstage.\u00a0 He also passed the 11 pm noise curfew in London and was fined \u00a310,000 per minute for the overrun.\u00a0 The total fine was \u00a3300,000, a drop in the ocean to the young Canadian.\u00a0 He was booed and a lot of people had left by the time he got onstage because they had buses to catch and had young kids. That\u2019s a pure disgrace.\u00a0 Is he getting too big for his boots at 19 years of age?<\/p>\n<p>I remember another concert Loreto and I went to in Landsdown Road a few years ago. It was Michael Flatley and he arrived nearly 2 hours late too. I would never go to a Michael Flatley concert again.\u00a0 It was the same thing with a Cher concert we went to. The show started at 8 with Tommy and Martin Taylor playing.\u00a0 It had been billed that Martin was doing support.<\/p>\n<p>I know Martins music also. He is a self taught guitarist who mainly plays jazz \u2013 more particularly the Django Reinhardt style \u2013 for the past 50 years.\u00a0 For his contribution to music he was given two Honorary Doctorates in 1999 and 2010 and an MBE from the Queen in Buckingham Palace. In 2007 he received the prestigious BBC Radio 2 \u201cHeart of Jazz\u201d Award in recognition of his career in music and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Wales Jazz Guitar Festival for his \u201cContribution to Jazz Guitar Worldwide\u201d.\u00a0 He has also received a record 14 British Jazz Awards as a guitarist, and as a composer he was nominated for \u201cBest Contemporary Song\u201d in the BBC Folk Awards in 2009.<\/p>\n<table class=\"mceItemTable\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<div class=\"avPlayerWrapper avVideo\">\n<div class=\"avPlayerContainer\">\n<div id=\"AVPlayerID_4_47bcd3fd7198ccb6613863d13068156c\" class=\"avPlayerBlock\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"JoomlaWorks AllVideos Player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yEC8XPqSkvw?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"350\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Martin has played with such greats as StephaneGrapelli, Jeff Beck, Chet Atkins, Bill Wyman, George Harrison, Dionne Warwick, Diane Schuur and Jamie Cullum.\u00a0 He recorded over 20 albums and one with StephaneGrapelli \u201cTogether At Last\u201d won a Grammy Nomination in 1987.\u00a0 His music was used in many films, including \u201cMilou En Mai\u201d directed by Louis Malle, and more recently his composition \u201cGreen Lady\u201d is featured in the Andrew Piddington movie \u201cThe Killing of John Lennon\u201d.\u00a0 His music was used as the theme for \u201cAfter You\u2019ve Gone\u201d featuring Nicholas Lyndhurst and Celia Imrie, and the cult \u201cNicole-Papa\u201d TV commercials for the Renault Clio.<\/p>\n<p>So Martin is up there with the best of the best.\u00a0 He is no gobdaw and on stage he was brilliant.\u00a0 His fingers do the talking.<\/p>\n<table class=\"mceItemTable\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<div class=\"avPlayerWrapper avVideo\">\n<div class=\"avPlayerContainer\">\n<div id=\"AVPlayerID_5_2be77700a1451e3796416bcd0db0b1b7\" class=\"avPlayerBlock\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"JoomlaWorks AllVideos Player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2KYIQBfdy-s?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"350\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>But, and here is the but. We didn\u2019t go to see Martin Taylor all night.\u00a0 I thought he was going to play support until maybe 8.30 and then Tommy would take over, like at previous concerts.<\/p>\n<p>I know they were promoting their new CD together \u2013 \u201cThe Colonel &amp; The Governor\u201d, which I can tell has great music on it, but we booked to see Tommy and in all fairness he only played about 3 tunes onstage alone, two of which were his signature pieces of \u201cguitar boogie\u201d and \u201cclassical gas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There were two absolute masters onstage and nearly everyone in the audience played the guitar, so they appreciated the skills.<\/p>\n<p>Martin spent more time onstage alone than Tommy did yet we didn\u2019t go to see a Martin Taylor show, we went to see a Tommy Emmanuel show.\u00a0 The ticket says \u2018Tommy Emmanuel with guest Martin Taylor\u2019.<\/p>\n<table class=\"mceItemTable\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<div class=\"avPlayerWrapper avVideo\">\n<div class=\"avPlayerContainer\">\n<div id=\"AVPlayerID_6_43bc0a55f373a9303fede535f52af768\" class=\"avPlayerBlock\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"JoomlaWorks AllVideos Player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pgo4BWxT10I?rel=0&amp;fs=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"350\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I know I\u2019m sounding bitchy about this, so now that I\u2019ve said it, I\u2019m getting over it.<\/p>\n<p>As I said, there were two thorough professionals onstage.<\/p>\n<p>Martin made his guitar sound like steel drums \u2013 calypso style \u2013 in Down at Cocomo\u2019s.\u00a0 Tommy made his guitar sound like a set of drums using his hands and his drum brush. What they couldn\u2019t do with their guitars couldn\u2019t be done.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy commented in the middle of the concert that a ticket for the concert was given to him because a gentleman, whose name I can\u2019t remember, who was due to go to the concert, died on Monday.
